ANOTHER WEDNESDAY

We’re cleaning out the parrot enclosure

this time. It’s always fun,

and today is even more so

because Alex is here.

The parrots like Alex.

He can make them do things

nobody else can.

Say funny things, like

eureka!

And when Alex says,

“Luke”

in his best Darth Vader voice,

one parrot always responds with

“I am your father.”

Today, we try something new

that we read about online.

Teaching the parrots

new songs.

So as we sweep

and clean up poop

(which isn’t as gross as it sounds,

I swear),

we whistle the Mario Brothers theme music.

Just the beginning.

Over and over.

The birds don’t seem to be catching on.

“Maybe we should try

something else,”

Jayla says.

Alex shakes his head

but doesn’t look up from the ground he’s sweeping.

Sings,

dum!”

“Ba da da    da

ba

And somehow,

like magic

(though Alex would argue

it’s purely science),

a parrot sings back:

“Bum              bum

bum      bum      bum

bum              bum.”

And then Jayla and I

shake our heads.

Because we’ll never be

as good at this as Alex.

Never.
